RETINAL DETACHMENT

The retina is a thin layer of light sensitive tissue that covers the posterior wall of the eye, it can compare with the film of a camera where the light input is received and transformed to neural impulses and transferred to the brain through the optic nerve.

If the retina detaches or does not function the vision can be lost, that is why it is very important to detect an early detachment since prompt treatment can save your vision.

Vitreous detachment (the gel of the eye) can predispose to a retinal tear and lead to a retinal detachment; other predisposing conditions for retinal detachment are: lattice degeneration, myopia, previous cataract surgery, trauma, history of retinal detachment in the fellow eye in 10% of the cases, family history.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE A PROMPT VISUAL EXAM TO PREVENT IRREPARABLE VISUAL LOSS.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SYMPTOMS

Are increasing floaters, flashes of light (Photopsias), ring of floaters, loss of visual field, shadow in the peripheral vision that advances, the sensation of a veil or a curtain on your visual field, distortion or loss of central vision when macula is involved.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE A PROMPT VISUAL EXAM TO PREVENT IRREPARABLE VISUAL LOSS.

The incidence of retinal detachment is 10 to 18 patients per 100,000 thousand population, usually requires surgical intervention.

A treatment plan will be explained prior to any procedures.
